The team.

In accordance with the decision of the Danish Polar Center the expedition was postponed to April-May 2000. The official reason of this action was an unusually intensive melting process of glaciers at the island. Due to the postponing of the initial dates of the expedition the budget of the expedition had increased two times. As a result the number of the participants of the team was reduced to three people.

Matvey Shparo.

Age: 24; Moscow, Assisatant Director of the Adventure Club; an undergraduate of the Moscow Electronics & Mathematics College. In 1995 Matvey Shparo was a co-leader of the ascent of five disabled participants in wheel chairs of the Mt. Kazbek (5047 m), Caucasus, Georgia. In 1997 he headed the expedition of disabled sportsmen to Mt. Kilimanjaro (5895 m), Tanzania. In March 1998 Matvey Shparo together with his father Dmitry Shparo for the first time in history crossed by ski the Bering Strait. This expedition was recorded in the London Guinness Book of Records.

 

Boris Smolin.

Age: 37; Obninsk, Kaluzhskaya oblast, a graduate of the Tomsky Polytechnic College, at present works at the Adventure Club, in 1982–1994 his outdoor experiences included backpacking and rock climbing; winter ascents. In 1987 he was the participant of the team, which unsupported crossed the Karakum desert from the north to the south. Participated in the second and the forth preparatory stages of the expedition.

 

Igor Kuznetsov.

Age: 27; Barnaul; spinal cord injury; uses a wheel chair since 1994; A graduate of a high school. A champion of Barnaul in cross-country skiing for disabled people in wheel chairs; a bronze prizewinner of the Russian championship in weightlifting up to 60 kg for disabled. A member of the Altaisky regional Association "Preodoleniye" of disabled people in wheel chairs. Participated in the second – forth preparatory stages of the expedition.
