The Youth Action "To the North Pole!"

The mass Youth All-Russia Action "To the north Pole' will be held at the same time with the record Expedition of Matvey Shparo and Boris Smolin.

In April 2008 seven youths (girls and boys), chosen among the participants of the Action on the basis of the Competition, will travel 100 km (under the guidance of Matvey Shparo and Boris Smolin) from the drifting station Barneo (89° N) to the North Pole.

The girls and boys (15-18 years old) are invited to take part in this Action (teenagers from the orphanages and specialized correction schools can also participate).

In order to participate in this event it is necessary to fulfill the two preliminary conditions: to have an experience of active tours and to send the filled application form with the answers to several questions.

The participants of the team, which will go to the North Pole, would be chosen due to the results of a multi-stage selection.

At the first stage the participants must every day dedicate no less than one hour to ski training and no less than one hour to theoretical preparation: geography lessons at school, study of the history of the native region and the history of the Arctic exploration. It is also necessary to take part in the "Russian Ski-track" All-Russia Competition on February 10, 2008 (in one's own region).

The winners of the I stage would be invited to Moscow at the All Russia Finish of the "Russian Ski-track" (17.02.2008) Competition. The Jury will nominate 15 candidates admitted to the III stage.

The candidates admitted to the III Selection stage will be invited to Moscow in March 2008 for careful medical examination and a weekly training camping at the Youth Camp "Great Adventure" in the Republic of Karelia. The training will include a ski tour and the final selection of the seven participants of the main group.

Seven chosen boys and girls will compose the team of the Expedition headed by Matvey Shparo and Boris Smolin, which will travel to the North Pole from the Russian drifting Station Barneo (89° N) on April 13, 2008.

Safety of the Youth Expedition would be provided in the same way as it was done during the dog sled Expedition of Prince Allbert II of Monaco in April 2006 from the Barneo Station to the North Pole (Matvey Shparo was a guide in this Expedition, Dmitry Shparo was responsible for safety).

It is planned that the Youth Expedition will reach the North Pole on April 19, 2008.

The members of the Jury, which will select the final participants of the Youth Expedition, include famous sportsmen and public figures of Russia: Leo Bokeria, a famous pediatric surgeon, Vyacheslav Fronin, Editor-in chief of the "Rosiiskaya gazeta", Vasily Kiknadze, Editor-in chief of the national TV-channel "Sport" , Mikhail Malakhov, a polar explorer, a recipient of the honorary award "Hero of Russia", Irina Rodnina, the repeated Olympic Champion in figure skating, Dmitry Shparo, a famous polar explorer, the Director of the Adventure Club and others.

The Chairman of the Jury: Vyacheslav Fetisov, the repeated Champion of the world, the Olympic ice hockey Champion, Minister of Sport.
